The Potter’s Coat + Gifts for Makers

The Potter’s Coat + Gifts for Makers

All of us at East Fork are totally smitten with STATE the Label, a Thomson, Georgia based clothing line started by Adrienne Antonson in 2010.  STATE’s clothes are designed to make the wearer feel comfortable and inspired, and each garment is made in the U.S. - many of which made in STATE’s Thomson studio - from sustainable, organic, recycled and reclaimed materials when possible.

At the STATE trunk show we hosted at our Asheville store in November, we all fell in love with their super versatile, classic-yet-current Potter’s Coat, and with a name like that, we couldn’t resist carrying a few in the shop.  Available in natural canvas and dark wash Japanese denim with an open front and two deep pockets, the Potter’s coat is just as perfect for wearing around the studio as it is for throwing over any outfit for an added dose of utilitarian cool.

We love STATE, and we think their clothes are the perfect uniform for any artist, maker, or craft-minded person who wants to feel comfortable and ready to take on their day without sacrificing their sense of style.  Makers, designers, artists - creative folks of all types - can be tough to shop for.  Often they're super selective about the objects they with which they surround themselves, too busy in the studio to pursue many interests beyond their work, or, perhaps most maddeningly, have hyper-specific yet ever-changing tastes.

Fortunately we love them all the same; without them, our lives would want for that special yet infectious passion, curiosity, and drive that only artists exude.  Below, a selection of other special objects to show your dearest craftsperson that you understand them, you value them, and you wish they'd take better care of their hands.

You can shop the STATE Potter’s coat along with our other gift picks for makers in our web shop.

  • Golden Mean Calipers are tools made to find the golden ratio between points and are used by designers, engineers, craftspeople, and creatives of all types to ensure aesthetically pleasing proportions in their work.
  • Clary Balm is the perfect salve to keep in your bag that treats everything from cracking cuticles to dry lips to chafed nipples.  A staple.
  • Vitamin C: Clay + Ceramic in Contemporary Art is a beautiful survey of contemporary work from artists working in clay and ceramics around the world and is chock-full of inspiration for potters, sculptors, and artists of all media.
  • Higonokami Pocket Knife is the classic take-everywhere tool with a special history.  When Japan's samurai class was dissolved at the end of the 19th century, weaponmakers turned to this clever design to market their metalsmith skills to the common consumer.  Sharp, made to last forever, and stylish.
